Count MOS from 0
Normally Margin Of Success is calculated by subtracting the roll from the target number. I hate subtraction. Instead, count MOS up from 0. This makes the MOS equal to the roll on a success. This is more consistent with opposed rolls where the higher successful roll wins. MOS for opposed rolls is the difference between rolls. MOF still requires subtracting the target number from the roll.
Extended Rolls
In some cases, it is desirable to split a roll into multiple rolls to increase dramatic tension. In these cases, it is usually more important 'when' a character succeeds or how much progress they have made instead of 'if 'they succeed. In these cases, the task is assigned a total MOS threshold and interval length. They player may then use multiple intervals to make progress towards completing the task. The player may roll every interval to determine progress. The MOS of each successful roll is added between intervals until the total equals or exceeds the threshold. Critical successes count double for MOS or immediately finish the task. Critical failures subtract from the current total or require the player to restart.
Retroactive Take Time
When time is not particularly relevant nor enhances dramatic effect and when a character has a reasonable chance of success, players my apply a take time bonuses retroactively.
